Praesence Past Score

Score introduction: This score has been created to bring an awareness to the many temporalities in the here and now or praesence. It is a reminder that an active engagement to presence can not be considered in isolation and that the people involved in your immersive experience, whether they are performers, audience members or participants, carry their own embodied histories with them, as part of the experience.

Take a moment to find a space, where you can be seated or standing, whatever you prefer.

Take a few breaths to return to your body, if you feel any way separated.

Feel free to either close your eyes or leave them open.

Focus on the sounds around you as you breathe, bringing an awareness to yourself as part of time and space.

I want to invite you to connect with a past self, as you sit in the here and now. The past self could be a memory, your younger self, an ancient self, an ancestor, a flow of energy or sensation, or just a whisper…

If your past self doesn’t appear quickly, that’s fine. Let yourself arrive in your own time

Just continue sitting or standing and breathing.

If you appear as an image or memory, can you observe what you look like? How old do you appear to be? What are you wearing? What is your expression? Do you seem safe and settled? Happy? Fearful? Distressed?

If your past self appears as a sensation or energy what can you feel, smell, sense?

How does your present body experience this presence from the past? Do you feel comforted? Welcomed? Loved? Relaxed? Compassionate? Afraid? Constricted? Do you want to move toward or away from this person? Does your body want to touch or hold this person, or push them away?

Could you perhaps start to move and respond to, even dance with your past self?

Explore this for a little while.

When you are ready, thank this past presence. Then let it shift back to your periphery and  return fully alert to the space in the room and the people surrounding you.
